Should I change my Yaris ATF

  • Hi Scotty,
  • I bought a used 2011 toyota yaris with 77500 km on it two weeks ago from a first owner, it is my first car, i went to the dealer to ask about the milage for changing the gear oil, he told me 80k or 3 years...
  • I checked the gear oil before buying the car and it was light red colored, so i assumed it is still good and changable... But at the dealer they told me that not only the milage matters but also the time, and since it is 7 years past their recommendation for gear oil change, i would better keep the oil and not change it even if it seemed clean, just because it is very old..
  • Does that make since?
  • Please let me know if i would better change the oil or keep it.
  •
  • The car is in very good shape and i plan to keep it for a long time.

So its 50k miles, I think you should change it. Between 30-60k is recommended. What does your owners manual say?

I would change it

OK, you say gear oil (which is what most folks say when they are talking about manual transmission oil), but then you say it is red, which is typical of an automatic.

Are we talking about a manual or automatic?

If manual, I think you would be hard pressed to find a mechanic who would argue with changing the oil.

80k kilometers = 50k miles, and Scotty hs often said that ATF change interval should be OK at 30-60K miles in his videos.

Sorry, i forgot to mention, it is automatic, thanks for giving dual replies <3

In these situations, if there is ever any question , I change it out, then I KNOW the status of the maintenance on the vehicle instead of just guessing.
