Help with F-150 rough idle

Hi Scotty,

I have a 2012 Ford F-150 FX4 supercrew with 110k miles. It has the 5.0 v8 woth the 6speed automatic. I have performed all of the scheduled maintenance through a dealer.

I purchased it new in 2012 and I am very familiar with it. A while back (100k miles) I noticed a distinct idle issue where the engine tics, rpms drop 1-200 and I can feel a shake through the truck. In the last 10k miles I have replaced the plugs, coil packs, pcv valve, and MAF sensor. I have cleaned the throttle body, used fuel injector cleaner, and had the fuel pump fuse relocated (known issue of it overheating, had this done at the dealer). After each change I have unplugged the battery to allow the computer to reset. I am at a loss now as there is no CEL (never has been) and the dealer says that they "cannot replicate the issue". If I drive for a while and come to a stop, it almost stutters to a stall. What else is there left for me to check/replace? How concerned should I be about this issue before I start shopping for a new vehicle? Thanks for your time and your channel.

Have you already checked for vacuum leaks?

Check spark plugs and make sure they are gapped correctly. If not that, I would check the fuel filter to make sure it is not clogged, or take it to a trusted mechanic. It is odd that it is doing this at 110K miles, for as good of an engine that it is. I wish you luck with finding the fix.

Do you have a similar aftermarket oil breather on the valve cover? Heard these can cause issues with the idle on the 5.0's

Thanks for the responses.

I checked for vacuum leaks using a can of starter fluid. Didn't find any. I checked the gap on every spark plug when I installed them which was only 4-5k ago. I only use top tier gasoline from BP. The crappy part is that the fuel filter is INSIDE the tank on these trucks. It's not on the rail like previous models. And I do not think it has an oil breather like the one shown above.

Did you test the fuel pressure? Scotty has a video on that; that can at least eliminate fuel pump and filter or point to something there.

You didn’t mention air filter - but does that look fine? Trying to eliminate all the low hanging fruits.
