Just acquired an 02 MB SLK320 base @ 92K from Copart for a steal because of mechanical failure (k40 relay invisible fail). Before I replaced the K40, I thought the fuel pump died so I replaced it, fuel filter, plugs, wires, coils, & filters so far. Looks like she's sat a bit - tires cracked & the bumper & grille are noticeably damaged (grille crumbled upon removal) so I assume unreported minor front-end impact as well. Took her for a test drive after relay replacement & there was a point where on a slight incline after breaking, she started rolling backward in Drive & would not go forward with the accelerator. I hit the brakes, put her in Park, then back to Drive & took her back home. Tank was full so I topped her off with a little less than a gallon. I was told I need to run the old gas out. Neighbor also suggested I change the transmission fluid. I'm pretty sure I can follow the procedure from Pelican Parts. What would you recommend?
Now you know why you got it for a steal. Those old German cars will bankrupt you with repairs.
I seriously doubt a fluid change is going to fix that transmission. If it was in drive and would not go, that's not a good sign and normally means you need a new transmission. And on that car, buckle up my friend. They are expensive.
But as @mountainmanjoe said, you won't do any harm in changing it at this point. When you do, I'd look for any metallic glitter in the fluid as well.
sure, try changing the fluid, but it's unlikely to fix the issue. It sounds too serious.
