I have a 2014 Subaru Impreza (2.0) manual transmission, with 48,000 miles. You (and others) have said that I should expect a blown head gasket at around 100,000 miles. A guy on the internet (Mr. Subaru) says there is a fix using three gaskets with no graphite. Would it make any sense for me to proactively replace my gaskets now if I intend to keep this car past 100k? Anything else I can do to avoid this problem?
That should not be a problem on a 2014 model. Imprezas from 1999-2011 are the ones affected. Use the proper coolant changed at the recommended intervals and don't ever let the engine overheat.
The head gasket issue was with older 4-cylinder engines. late 90's to about 2010/11. Subaru finally put the better design head gasket in them, so that failure should be history with proper maintenance. When I changed the head gaskets on my 2002 Suby I learned that you want to use Subaru's coolant and nothing else.
If you do get the heads rebuilt, use ARP head studs and you'll never have to worry about them again.
