Hello,
I have an automatic transmission AWD 2004 Toyota Matrix XR with about 165,000 miles on it, no codes.
I am just wondering, if purchasing a new car, from a private party, when paying a good mechanic to inspect the car before purchasing, is it a good idea to give them an extra sum of money pre-inspection, on top of their inspection fee, to incentivize them be be extra thorough in their inspection? Imagine slapping a Benjamin Franklin on the counter, looking the mechanic in the eye and telling them "I want to give you this $100 if you will make sure it will be a very thorough job...can I give you this in exchange for a job well done, preemptively?"
Thank you
hmm ... interesting.
I've heard that's how it used to be done. The word TIP came from "To Insure Promptitude". And you would pay up front, so that you would get preferential treatment at hospitality establishments.
On the other hand, maybe some would consider it an insult. As if you were saying "you probably won't do your job unless I bribe you".
If you do it, make sure you say something like "I want you to look EXTRA carefully."
Let us know how it goes.
Exactly!
yeah, I'm worried about the implied insult, as you suggest. :/
then ask him what his hourly rate would be if he was to take his time and check the car as thoroughly as he can,
It really depends on the person. If all they care about is $$$, they’ll happily take the extra $100, yet still do a half hearted inspection.
Hence it’s important to 1. Find the right mechanic, who’s honest & 2. Stick with them!
