I have a 1997 Explorer with 188k miles, a 6cyl, auto, and cold air. The trans has always shifted rough since I have owned it (7 years). If I back of the gas it will roughly shift. This makers of this part says that it fixes the problem
They say it's a worn servo bore on the Ford 5R55W, 5R55N, and the 5R55S transmissions was to have the bores bored out and sleeved. This obviously involves dropping the transmission. This is a common issue with Ford Explorers, Mountaineers, Aviators, Lincoln LS, and Mustangs where the OD light is blinking (that turns into a check engine light) and you have symptoms like shift flares, high revs between shifts, and slipping in overdrive and other gears.
Their fix involves a patented fix where o-ring grooves are machined into the OEM parts. They show videos of doing the replacement of the servos without pulling the trans. The kit is $220
My question is do you think this will work or since I have been driving this with the problem the transmission is shot and I should just buy a new vehicle?
Thanks for great advice and sharing your mechanical expertise.
Hello,
I'm not familiar with this modification, The one thing I get from what your saying is they cut 'O' ring grooves into a parts on the transmision, Once this is done there is no turning back for future repairs.
I am including a rebuild link for you to look at, It may assist in your decision to rebuild the transmission.
All the Best.
@dvkala
Thank you, I will
I have never done it.
Here is the curiosity side of me.
Try and see how it goes after looking at the video and understanding your capability
The scared side of me.
Things go wrong I could be stuck with a truck for x days or break something big time.
Or screw it completely and i need a new transmission..
if the transmission is shot and it not working what have you got to loose by 220 dollar (which is alot of money)
And some time for a gain of a working car?
