I’m thinking about buying a new car and I really like the new Kia K5. From what I can tell Hyundai’s 1.6L 4 cylinder is a pretty good engine as long as I make sure to do the valve cover gasket and clean the intake valve. What do you think about the reliability of the updated Kia Optima and Kia in general lately?

Well, … I think I will sit this one out for a while. Watch, listen, and see. Two years from now, I’m sure I will have a some kind of opinion. Currently, … it’s not a very positive one.
Anyway, you already identified couple of issues, … we shall see if that list will grow.
In the meantime, if you really, really need to buy a new car, I would look for something else, … more proven, more reliable, … better history of excellent service. And if don’t need to buy a car, … I would simply wait. There are simply no good buys out there right now, … regardless of make. fwiw.
F.S.
The 1.6 Hyundai engine in it has been out since 2012 I believe. Any other issues with the engine would be known by now. They aren’t reinventing the wheel with this car they’re pulling out of a parts bin
Yes. I know that they aren’t reinventing the wheel: ICE is an ICE ( Karl Benz, on January 29, 1886, obtained a patent for ICE), yet, … yet just last May, Hyundai recalled over 390,000 vehicles in Canada and the U.S. for engine fire risks due to pair of defects. A pair of defects, yes, … one involves brake fluid leaking into the anti-lock brake computer, causing an electrical short that results fire, … second being piston rings not having been heat treated properly, causing them to be too hard and chipping inside the engine.
Anyway, … you asked a question, you got answers. More than just mine, in fact. Peril is now all yours, …

Save your money and look for something else. We are currently not recommending Hyundai Motor Group products, as their quality has been on a decline for a while. See below:

How are you going to "clean the intake valve?" I would rather walk than buy a Kia and drive it.
No never buy a Hyundai Kia product. Don't trust the crooks who think they are reliable, they ARE NOT. I would get a Honda Accord< Mazda 6 or Toyota Camry over the Kia K5. Much better-built vehicles and they will outlast the Kia.
Kia doesn't know how to build cars

KIA : KILLED IN ACTION
They don't last more than 100000miles
They have electronic failure
The new ones have ECU problems
I’ve personally had 2 Kias in my immediate family with well over 100k miles neither with any major mechanical issues. A Rio and a sorento, one we still have and the other was replaced with the new Kia crossover
This is just from doing a bad oil change and all of his oil leaking out, kind of unfair as any car would give up without oil
