The starter made grindy noises on a 2012 Honda CR-V, pristine condition, only 31,000 miles, auto trans, garage kept, driven by a grandma (MIL). I replaced the starter from below with a new, identical Honda-brand starter, which fixed the problem. Then (immediately) the “P0328 Knock Sensor 1 Circuit High Input (Bank 1)” CEL code came up. The sensor showed 500Kohms, in spec, but I bought an identical sensor and installed it, hoping for a simple fix. Nope. The sensor’s connector is in great shape, clean, etc., and it clicks/unclicks normally.
What could the problem be, other than a broken wire in the harness? I’m loathe to take all that apart again to get to the harness, hoping for another option. My OBD device will usually erase codes on demand, but could it be just too simple ($99 a decade ago) to erase the code?
Solved! Bad upstream connection -- a connector upstream on the harness looked closed from underneath the car, but wasn't in all the way. Fully connecting it solved the problem. The OBD box then worked as expected. It might be 10 years old, but the car is 9. 🙂
