Hello Scotty, thanks for your videos. They have helped me quite a bit over the years.
I have been somewhat stumped by a problem I’m having with the engine on my motorhome. I have a 1992 Damon Challenger that has a Chevy 454 in it, automatic transmission, with 63,635 miles on it.
It has a hydro boost system on it. Meaning if the power steering goes out, so do the brakes.
A while back, I was driving down the hill and came to a part in the road that had some wavy portions on it. This was a place where big rigs had been slowing down and somehow created a washboard effect on the road. When I hit that section, my steering went crazy. It started wobbling back-and-forth really rapidly, and I had to jam on the brakes to calm everything down.
Early that next day, I noticed that there was some sort of fluid underneath the motorhome. Upon inspection, I found that it was power steering fluid.
I also noticed that there was power steering fluid coming out of the reservoir that’s located on the front driver side portion of the engine bay. It was coming out of the top of reservoir somehow leaking even with the cap on it.
I tried putting in more fluid, but it leaked out as well, and later that day, the power steering did go out along with the power brakes. The loss of the power brakes was most concerning, as I had to put it in neutral in order to get the Motorhome to stop.
I thought it was the power steering pump that failed, so I went and bought a new one, and put that on.
It still was leaking fluid, but this time, it looked like it was leaking from the pump itself.
The power steering pump has a high-pressure line that comes off of the back, and three return lines (one being a large diameter hose that comes in from the reservoir). And when the pump is on and adjusted, the hoses point off to the driver’s side at about a forty-five degree angle.
The pump is buried inside of the engine compartment, and I have to remove the oil cooler and radiator in order to see it. That makes this really challenging because you have to take everything apart to get to the problem and put everything back together in order to see if it works
after that first attempt, I replaced the high pressure hose and two of the three return lines: it is still leaking power steering fluid.
This time, when I reinstalled everything and started it up to test the system, I turned the wheel back and forth a few times and then went to look underneath and noticed it was still leaking.
I’m wondering what could be the issue. Could it be :
- I somehow have the hoses improperly hooked up, flip-flopped? (I didn’t think that could be possible since they are both return lines.)
- Am I using improper clamps, that cannot hold the pressure? I do have them on there good and tight.
- Could the hydrobooster be broken and that’s why the system is leaking?
Any ideas would be a great help. Thanks in advance.
I have pics, but don’t know how to upload them as I am on a cell phone, and perhaps that functionality is not working atm
Upload your photos to something like imgur.com on a computer and then post the share links here, use the forum formatting.
Thanks Justin! Here’s a link to the pics:

Well realize this if there is a buildup of pressure in the system that should not be there the pump will start blowing fluid all over the place. And unfortunately that stupid thing has the hydro boost system so your power steering and your power brakes are all part of that system. Somewhere in that insane system there is a buildup of pressure and that's putting back pressure to blow fluid out of the pump. You said you did hit some wacky road washboard who knows maybe one of the metal brake lines got bent and that'll build up back pressure too
Thanks Scotty, that’s good advice. I will simply keep replacing parts until I hit that lucky one 🙂
Here is a video I posted of it this morning on imgur if it helps at all. Thanks. -A->

Hi Scotty,
I am still working on fixing my power boost system, and there’s a component (at location c. In my diagram) that I am not sure of. Do you know what it is?
It’s located above the power steering gear box, on the driver’s side of my Motorhome
thanks in advance!
I should add that this is on a 1992 Damon Challenger. It codes as a Chevy P30. It has 65k miles on it. Chevy 454.
