- I have a 2005 v6 regular vtec honda pilot. My lowbeams went out completely while driving in the backroads on my way home at 10pm. I bought new lights at napa and tried to replace them but still only the highbeams work (highbeams and lowbeams are in one light) i got my fellow toyota techs to check it out. Even a guy that used to work for honda for 5 years. They checked the relays and fuses and even the power to the lights themselves and couldn't find anything. Im sure the switch is working becuase the relays would click. Also i dont know if it helps but before going out completely. Theyd randomly go out for a second and then turn back on.
Did you guys check the high beam switch? Failure of that part frequently causes headlight problems.
Well it has to be the relay switch, especially since the high beams are working on the SAME bulbs the low beams are supposed to work on. The relay controls the voltage sent to the light, so if you want low beams the relay would send low voltage to the bulbs (bright) and if you want high beams the relay will send high voltage to the bulb (brighter). I would check the relays again and perhaps check the switch for the headlights. There is some wiring problem going on between the relay and the headlight switch in the cabin. Did you buy the correct replacement bulbs? The bulbs you purchase may not have dual headlight functionality. These are special bulbs that have two filaments in one bulb (low beam only powers one filament and high beam powers both filaments), so you may have bought bulbs that have only one filament inside.
Yeah I bought the exact bulbs, checked the highbeam relays aswell. They click so means theyre getting power? Ill need ro see the wiring diagram but dont have the knowledge to do it myself. But i also dont wanna pay 200$ for a dealer diag. Anyways thanks guys
They click when you switch on the high beams or low beams? Are you assuming the relay works because of the click sound you hear from it or did you actually test it with a multimeter? Even though it might make a click sound when you switch on the headlights, it may not be sending voltage to the bulb (may be shorted inside the relay). My gut feeling is that it has to be a relay issue because the bulb is getting power in general (since high beams work), but it's not able to switch on the low beam setting. If you happen to have an exact looking relay somewhere else in the fuse box, try using it for the headlights to see if that works (just don't turn the engine on while switching relays around).
