[Solved] Manual Transmission Gear Oil

Hey uncle Scotty!

I've always watched your videos, but I haven't found a video about changing a Manual Transmission's fluid. We have a 97 Toyota Corona, with 166,000kms on her. What's your take on the manual transmission's side, can we change the fluid? Especially on older M/T Transmissions?

Thank you!

Yes you can. You want to change the oil in manual transmissions every once in a while for proper gear lubrication. Research what type of gear oil viscosity it takes (75w-90, 75w-45, or it might even use ATF) and change the oil.

Hi, thanks for the response!
It isn't as bad as changing A/T fluid? Because some if changed after a long time, for the first time, has a tendency of not working well right?

@joshuathemechanicnoob
That's because automatic transmissions use the fluid for BOTH lubrication and hydraulic power to shift. The fluid plays a big role for the proper operation of an automatic transmission. When an automatic transmission hasn't had a fluid change in a while, it starts to rely on the old fluid as a source of friction for the clutch-packs, so if you add new fluid all of a sudden it can start causing some slippage. In the case of a manual transmission, the fluid/oil is strictly used to lubricate the gears, so changing it will definitely help increase the life of the transmission. Hope this explanation clarifies everything.

Thank you very much! I appreciate this informative response!

Razmig has the answer.  Changing your manual transmission can only make it better and last longer.  Be sure to use the manufacturer's recommended oil and, critically important, the correct amount.  Take your time with this, it's not like a normal engine oil change.

Thanks! Appreciate it
