Hey Scotty,
Im stuck trying to get a good first car (preferably used) but I somewhat do have options:
2001 Honda Accord V6 with 66k-67k mi(I plan to buy from a friend, if he sells it)
2016-present Toyota Corolla ( some were less than 160k mi)from a used car dealership or even the Toyota dealership itself.
2013-present Honda Civic (same mileage with the corollas atop) from a used car dealership or the Honda dealership itself
Point is I want a good used car. If you have better options please tell me. Year, Mileage, and where to buy it from.
thank you.
You are entering shark infested waters and need to do a lot more research before making a decision. Remember too, it is probably good to finance your first purchase to establish credit, which you will need in the future. You can always pay off the loan early to get out from under the interest on the loan.
Start with a search on our forum as there has been lots of discussion on this.
Which would be better?
Same as we advised you before: Research.
- Mileage
- Mechanical condition
- How well it was looked after.
- Recalls & Bulletins
- Ownership & accidents.
- etc.
See the buying guide in the FAQ for details.
There's also oodles of info in the forum if you use the search.
First of all don't buy from a dealership; high prices and most times in this market are cars people have dumped so they could be problematic.
Corolla or Civic if you are considering 2016 or newer then given the current used car market why not just buy new?! If you plan on maintaining the car and keeping it for a long time just buy new. A brand new base Corolla is $20,500 msrp.
It depends on how well it has been taken care of and how it was driven. Also, realize that this is a 22 years old car, which rubbers and plastics start to break here and there.
It's known for automatic transmission failure.
and it has poor safety, even by 2001 standards.
I'd avoid it
Oh and don’t forget to not overpay, it should be cheap.
( some were less than 160k mi)from a used car dealership or even the Toyota dealership
Way too much millage for a CVT!
Never buy a used car from a stealer ship!
2013-present Honda Civic
That's not a specific car - that's 3 generations.
Avoid turbocharged engines, Avoid CVTs - the rest a decent.
If you have better options please tell me.
That's as far as small sedans, there are plenty of other options.
If it is super cheap and checks out, maybe, if it is expensive, maybe not.
I have a 1999 Honda Accord at 277K+ miles since new.
They are amazing cars. I see tons of them still on the road. They supposedly had some transmission issues on the automatic, but if it has made this far, perhaps it is one of the ones without the problem.
The timing belt will probably need to be changed, if it hasn’t, which cost $. But that is just regular maintenance.
i
I’ve needed to changed the front struts and front suspension components because they have worn out of the years.
Buy a cheap OBDII scanner and test the cars yourself. Then when you find a fault free car take it to a mechanic for a more in depth check.
Hey Scotty.
I plan to buy a 2001 Honda Accord V6 from my friend if he plans to sell it. It has 66k-67k miles on it.
Is that a good idea or get something else? Or get it and trade it for something else?
Hey Scotty and experts.
I plan to buy a used Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic. What would the most reliable generation, should I be alerted by the number of mileage on it, and where do you recommend buying one if I can’t find a private dealer?
Thanks.
I’m trying choose a good first car. They’re great cars known for reliability. Which would be better?
