Newer F-150s with Turbo Chargers

Hey Scotty, what are your thoughts on the newer Ford F150s with a turbo charged V6, especially for someone that doesn’t haul, but still wants a full sized truck? I ask because I know you prefer Ford trucks, but have mixed feelings with turbos, and it seems like most of the newer, used Fords around me come with a turbo V6.
I’m trying to get rid of my ‘06 Ram 1500 Hemi V8 (which I know you would agree with because it’s a Ram) but I want to make sure you think it’s a good idea first if I were to go with a V6 Turbo F150. Thanks Scotty and love the channel!

The 1/2 ton truck market overall is weak in the US. If you’re looking at buying a Ford F-150 Ecoboost And you’re not towing a whole lot I’d buy an 18 or newer 2.7. The reason why I’d buy a 18 or newer is because Ford used duel injectors starting that yr. the 10 speed is still a little iffy but I think it has potential to be a decent transmission. Here’s what people aren’t comprehending. Small turbo motors w/ GDI and 10 speed transmissions are the future of 1/2 ton trucks. This idea is not going away (look at the new redesigned tundra) even the Japanese are going to a smaller turbo motor for the redesign. What I will say about Ford is compared to GM and others Ford actually works bugs out and improves quality overtime. Now I will say their customer service is absolute garbage but overall they do try to improve their trucks overtime. With the exception of the 3rd gen 5.0 which is a disgrace. But if you get that 2.7 or even a 3.5 I’ve seen 2013, 16, and 18s with 150k mi or more and still going. The turbos on the newer generations are better and seem to go around 180 k mi before a swap.

Fair enough. I guess replacing the turbo at 1xx,xxx miles is just the cost of doing business these days.

@dad2pwd unfortunately turbo replacement is part of regular maintenance now. I feel overtime the industry will be forced to manufacture a more stout turbo because enough people are going to be fed up with it. We’ll see though. I will say I have seen improvements on the turbos in the 2nd gen Ecoboost 2.7, 3.5 are better than the 1st gens.

Those Ford turbocharged engines are known to be problematic. Find a naturally aspirated F-150.

For the newer F-150s, I would avoid the turbo-charged engines as well as the 10-speed AT (a double whammy).  They just don’t seem to last as long as the older F-150s with the naturally aspirated V8s (stick to 2011-2014 1st Gen Coyote 5.0 and 2015-2017 2nd Gen 5.0) with the 6-speed AT.  Those were better made and more durable then the current offerings, unfortunately, on the F-150.

tbh ive given up on american cars completely if  you dont need to tow then check ou tacoma or tundra for longevity.

I would not buy ANY vehicle with a turbo.  It's just an excuse by manufacturers to use smaller (read that as cheaper) engines in vehicles that should have a normally aspirated V8 engine.

@doc I absolutely agree with you, unfortunately small, turbo, gdi motors will be the standard for 1/2 tons. The true V8 is out you can thank EPA and Gov for that. Soon this will be the only options for 1/2 tons.

Okay so everyone have said it

Don't buy newer

FORD

GM

DODGE

RAM

CHEV

Vehicles they are unreliable and endless money pits and won't last more than 100000miles no matter how much love and effort you put in them

As honest car enthusiasts I would recommend buying Toyota TRD or Toyota Tacoma . I have personal experience me and my friend rented f 250 for camping we were at Dallas highway going around 80 mph then our steering wheel start shaking really bad we had literally lost control over the car and were about to hit the wall. So if you value your life and money buy Toyota if not it's your choice
