Hello Scotty,

What is your opinion about the Nissan Qashqai SUV ?

Thank you.

Which generation? And which engine/transmission?

I am considering a manual transmission and petrol engine

They have some of the weakest gearboxes out there.

Please avoid petrol cars built by Alliance (Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi)

I’ve saw the those terrible Jatco (JF016E) CVTs disintegrate even before reaching 100,000 miles.

conclusion: unless it’s super cheap and has very low mileage, avoid like wildfire.

Actually I am considering a manual transmission and petrol engine.

Are Nissan manual transmission good enough ?

Manual transmissions are usually good.

In the case of the Qashqai the rest of the car isn’t high quality at all (it’s basically a French Renault Kadjar),

But if get the MR20DE (Renault M series) engine it can probably run for 200,000 miles. (most other engines including the MR20DD only last about 130,000 miles)

But it will be most definitely NOT be a very reliable car if you plan to keep it for more than 100,000 miles.

If you can, get the 1.5/1.7/1.9 diesels, they’re also very dependable engines, but the 1.5 (The Renault K9K) does have a timing belt that needs to be replaced every 40,000-60,000 miles.

If you are considering it, I’d definitely stay away.  We had some posts here:

Yeah they have major transmission problems. Definitely save your money and avoid those.

These Jatco CVTs are terrible in terms of reliability and cost a fortune to repair. Check out my answer/comment here if you want to know a very sad story about repairing a CVT on Qashqai.
