Hey Scotty, I hope you're enjoying Tennessee! I was wondering, what's your opinion on those Twist-Drain Oil Drain Plugs that auto parts stores sell for about $8-$10?

I think this is what he's talking about:

It looks like a bad idea to me.

It's sticks out too far, and looks fragile. Probably a good way to lose all your oil. Reviews say it gets full of dirt and doesn't work properly.

You can't beat the sturdiness and simplicity of the century old plain drain plug.

Another reviewer says it sprays oil out sideways like a fire sprinkler. Yuck.

And after the oil change was done, it dripped on the driveway.

I wouldn't touch anything that looks like it can catch rocks and road debris. Not worth it.

I don't understand the need. It's not hard to loosen a drain plug. They don't need to be torqued down hard.

I have used these with good results.

My opinion is generally KISS (keep it simple stupid! My principles of management professor in college told us that saying. 😆)

Me personally, I’d stick with stock. My drain plug on my 07 Ford has a reusable rubber gasket. Some have a metal o-ring that is supposed to be changed every time the plug is loosened. If yours has the metal o-ring, maybe look for a plug with the rubber gasket, that way it’s one less thing that SHOULD BE CHANGED every oil change.

But yea, I wouldn’t bother with that twist-to-open plug.
