Old car or New Car

Hey Scotty, I currently have a 1987 Corolla that I use as a daily driver as my first car. It's a beater car which rattles at high speeds and has quite a few issues but the engine and manual transmission are still rock solid after 33 years/150k miles! I now have a new job and have to commute longer, which isn't as comfortable as it should be and was looking to buy a second car. I am torn between a used 2012-14 Camry which I've seen for $10-12k with around 100k miles or one of those new Corolla Hatchbacks for around $21k with 30k miles. I like the look of both and I'm looking for a car I can drive until the wheels fall off like my 33 year old Corolla. Thanks.

Those are two very different cars - body style, era, price, etc

Get whatever you want. They are both good choices, just avoid the 2016 Scion IM and 17 Toyota IM's CVT. I would be all for one in manual though...

Remember that the Scion IM's are the original corolla hatches. They are probably a lot cheaper than the new gen hatches.

I'd go Camry and be done with it personally.

As soon as you drive off the Dealer lot with a "New" car; you just lost 60% of it's Value.  Buy a Repo, or a Bad Debt Auto from a Financial Institution.

I have had 2 or 3 very good deals from Bank Repo agents.  Call the Collection Department and ask them if they have any Repos.  They will LOVE to talk to you and make a Deal.  THEY are not CAR Salesmen!  They are just trying to get rid of "Bad Paper".  They will let you inspect, test drive and take the car to a mechanic for evaluation.  Make friends with them; and they will tell you where their lot is so you can see for your self.

Try it you will love it!

I would be careful with regards to the 2012-2014 Toyota Camry 2.5L NA I4 with 6-speed AT.  See below:

See also below for MYs Toyota Camry and Corolla to avoid (or at least be aware of potential issues if you buy):
