Hi Scotty,

I bought the car years ago and knew it leaked, but never reached the ground. I paid $7,500 for it in beautiful condition otherwise with 142K now it has 191K. I have the gear oil checked/replaced, or topped off somewhat regularly. I have no noise issues yet. I Maintain car. With new/used cars being crazy right now, I just would like to know what you think. It is leaking more now. Should I just keep a tray under car in garage to catch the clear clean fluid. I think the fluid is leaking from the weep hole meaning the $6 internal seal is bad on transfer case side. You think I could try something like AT-205 to help recondition that seal, but change the fluid afterward?  I love this car and at least as long as I check and fill it Would I be okay as long as no noises?

I value your opinion ideas.

Thanks Ray

AT-205 is at best a temporary band-aid. If you really want to keep the car long-term it would be best to have the leaking seal replaced.

Thanks. I had someone look at it and they think it is the transfer case cover that is leaking. I guess I need to figure out if the seal is rubber material or material that AT205 may help. But you are not saying it would hurt, just maybe not help. I just want to get by until cars are more reasonable.

Correct, it will not hurt anything but may not help, or may help for just a little while. It definitely won't work on gaskets, just rubber seals. If you give it a try you'll want to adjust the dosage to the capacity of the transfer case.

Thanks, I'll let you know what happens if I try it.

I had a similar decision last year with my Highlander, had the dreaded V6 timing cover oil leak. To fix it was cost prohibitive to me. Except for the leak it was superb. In the end I decided to sell it.  You could keep a pan underneath it, but to keep filling regularly is going to be a royal pain in the butt, because the fill plug is so difficult to access, and the leak will eventually progress. Tough call...good luck.

have you tried tightening the cover bolts?
