Hi Scotty,

I have a 2005 1/2 VW Jetta Value Edition 2.5L engine with 131,247 miles on it. The check engine light came on the latter part of October with a P0456 code. I started out by replacing the gas cap gasket and clearing the code. About 80 miles later the check engine light came on again. I replaced the gas cap and cleared the code. About another 80 miles later the check engine light came on again. The car was due for an oil change so I informed the dealer of the check engine light. They determined the N80 valve was faulty due to pressure readings drop. About two weeks later the check engine light came on again. I took the car back to the dealer, for the same error code, and they performed a smoke test on the evap system. They determined there might be a leak in the charcoal canister or the LD pump. These parts were replaced and another smoke test was done to check the evap system with no smoke visible and the code cleared. About 80 miles later the check engine light came on again with the same error code. I took the car back to the dealer again and they checked all the parts that had been replaced, ran another smoke test, inspected all the vacuum lines, ran another smoke test, and then determined that the battery was bad. The battery was about seven years old but had not given any indication of problems. They replaced the battery, cleared the code, reprogrammed the car, and drove the car for 130 miles to verify that the check engine light did not come on. Today, 197 miles after the latest work, the check engine light came on again. I pulled the same code, P0456. I called the dealer and the car has an appointment for next Tuesday.

Do you have any ideas or suggestions that I could pass on to remedy the problem? I have put about $2,500.00 into the car trying to fix this. The car is comfortable to drive, gets good mileage and has not had any major problems to this point.

I thank you in advance for your time.

Maybe have them check the breather valve which is located on the side of the fuel tank fill hose a few inches beneath the gas cap.

If you remove the fuel door, that rubber housing which surrounds the fuel fill hose comes out with the door and exposes the breather valve.

It's plastic with internal rubber seals which deteriorate over time and could be responsible for the small leak in the evaporative system which is triggering your P0456 error code.
