P0A93: Check Engine light & triangle of death for 2008 Toyota Prius

Hello Scotty

I was driving on a freeway and saw the Red triangle and check engine light on my 2008 Toyota Prius. I checked the error code and its P0A93, which is Inverter water pump failure. I took to the mechanic and when I reached there,  Both the lights (Red triangle and check engine) are gone. Mechanic asked me to come once the light comes again.

I did some research on how to check the Inverter pump failure. I checked the coolant for the inverter. I don't see any turbulence or anything flowing. I am suspecting the inverter pump is broken. But, I am not able to conclude whether the inverter coolant pump is broken or not.

I drove small distances of 2miles for 2 days. So far, I didn't get any warning lights. Should I change the Inverter pump anyway or wait for check engine & red triangle to show up.  I am concerned to keep driving and damage something else. If I had to replace, what is the reasonable cost.

Your advise is appreciated.

Thank you

I had the same problem with my 05’. I had autozone read the code and they told me it’s my water pump. Which would be impossible. I bought a OBD II code checker. YouTubed a bit… ordered the inverter coolant water pump, $35 took about a half hour to change it out… I did have an advantage my father is an ASE certified mechanic… have the right tools but it is fairly simple fix. A mechanic would charge over $500. I’ve driven over 1200 miles with no code at all. It has over 210,000 miles. I’m sure you’ve fixed your problem by now, this is for anyone else’s future reference.

I would pull it out and make sure it's working. (Or do you want to only drive 2mi distances from now on?)

By they way, how much does the part cost?

I would like to drive more. But I don't want to go too far from my home and risk damaging the Hybrid system.
Pulling out is time consuming - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_2-VV30dj3E

If I go ahead to pull it, I might replace it. OEM Part costs around $130. After market price from Amazon is $40.

By the way, car has 155k miles.

well that's not too bad of a price.
