Scotty, is it a particularly bad idea to drive a 2014 Toyota Prius that has a dead hybrid battery?  Is doing so particularly dangerous?

Not really of course you would run out of electricity eventually but I did know a guy who hooked up an alternator and a fan belt to a Prius and a regular car battery and then just drove it that way and it didn't have the power or the gas mileage but it still ran

There is a main power plug on the traction battery case, (dangerous). Sometimes they go bad, YouTube it. Unless it has 250k miles and up I am surprised the traction battery is bad.  Also the traction batteries can be purchased aftermarket under 1800. Last time I looked. Some folks rebuild them with 2 year warranty, but they just pull out low volt cells, other cells may fail.
