Hello Scotty,
I want to first thank you for being you. I am new to working on my own car and your videos are really helpful and clear. I especially want to thank you because you made me realize that my dad doesn't need to retire if he doesn't want to. He has worked all his life since a very young age and I thought it would be best for him to stop and take it easy. He was never on board with that idea and I could never understand why...until I saw your video about it. How could I ever wish my dad stop doing what he loves? He is a worker through and through and cannot stay idle. Since then, I decided to support my dad in whatever he wishes to pursue so long as he is safe. Now, onto my question.
My first car was a 2000 Toyota Avalon XLS purchased at 110,000 miles in 2015. It was a gift from my dad. I love this car. My dad loves the car. Since then, I have moved on to another Toyota and my father has kept the Avalon. It was still running great minus needing some suspension work. Yesterday, the catalytic converter was stolen. 😥 It was sawed off. Is my first car still worth repairing or Should I try to look for another car for my dad? I thought catalytic converters were only taken from Priuses. How wrong was I.
Honestly it is probably worth it to replace the catalytic converter. If your car is in good shape and is a good running car it doesn't make sense to waste it over a catalytic converter. Plus it also has sentimental vale to you and your dad. I would definitely fix it.
all catalytic converters have precious metals inside, making them worth a few hundred bucks.
It'll be around $1,000 to replace the cat. I'm not sure what your car is worth.
Sometimes sentimental attachment takes over. I know I would have a hard time parting with it, unless the cost was extremely exhorbitant to fix.
Unfortunately, cats are stolen on very popular (common) cars esp. much older ones since the cost to replace is very high on those.
