When I cold start my Toyota Camry 1998 le 4cyl

When I start it, it sounds normal when I’m letting it warm up then I hear a grinding noise for about 2-3 seconds then subside  sometimes it would grind again for 1-2 seconds it happens when engine is cold.

sometimes it doesn’t grind on cold but then when I start it up when I’m somewhere else and I drive it grinds a bit more then goes away.

Hot: https://youtube.com/shorts/yk6WdqKeRJ0?feature=share

when it’s hot I can faintly hear it

I check a Japanese auto specialist and he is saying the timing belt tensioner but my car has 115090 and I have records that my car had the timing belt changed at 98,000 miles

Did you try removing the drive belt(s) and seeing if the noise disappears? If it is internal to the engine, your mechanic could well be right. Do you know if the tensioners were replaced when you had the timing belt replaced?

I haven’t but I know that’s expensive for someone to do, what does it sound like to you though?

Removing the belt should be very easy, if you cannot do it yourself a mechanic should be able to remove it, determine if the noise is internal or external and reinstall the belt in no more than an hour. If it is a tensioner for the timing belt, expect to pay close to what you paid for the belt replacement, maybe a little more. I cannot say with any confidence what the source of the noise is from listening to your video, the mechanic that personally listened to it is likely right, but get a second opinion from another mechanic if you are not sure about him.

oldandy is talking about the accessory/serpentine belt, not the timing belt

I’m hearing it could be the belts, oil pump or valves.

Can I ask how to tell if it’s any of those? Like is the a certain sound that pinpoints any of the mentioned problems?

thanks

valves rattle, not grind.
Have you tried removing the accessory belt?

Not quite still needing a good set schedule for a mechanic to do that.

It’s a grinding noise in the video?

Thanks mountainman!

removing the belt is pretty easy. But if you're taking it a mechanic, then he'll be able to diagnose your noise 1000x better than I ever will over the internet.

Do you think the noise sounds like a rattle or grinding noise ?
