He recommends newer ones too. He warns about issues on certain years. An example:

Some newer trucks have smaller, turbocharged and/or GDI petrol engines to meet fuel economy requirements. Those engines wear out faster than bigger normally aspirated ones. Not suitable for towing heavy loads on a long run.

The quality of Toyota went down a little bit in the mid 2000s, but thats will all car brands and Toyota is still #1 in my books and I would have no problem buying one as long as it isn't a specific model to avoid. To the contrary of what you said, his best used cars videos consist mostly of early 2010s models. Scotty is cheap and personally gets cheap older reliable cars if you are refering to his personal rides.

I have a 1999 Corolla. I bought it four years ago with 120,000 km . Canada. I bought it from the grandson, estate sale. He didn;t want it $1000.00 . I have 290,000 now, I maintain it and it runs fine. handles well, I replaced rear struts. Just did alternator, that was $400.00 I went new reconditioned. Normal maintenance cost I think. I think I can drive it for maybe another three ro four years.

Scotty has a video praising the 2012 Camry. (which has its own set of issues). He, along with others, has also discussed the 2AZ-FE problems, on the 07-09 Camrys, RAV4, etc.

As you may notice, cars are becoming hyper digitalized, making them both more expensive to repair and keep and more expensive to insure. The early aughts represent the last generation with more reasonable use of sensors and computers.

Last week, an old friend bought a 2020 RAV4. He described it as outfitted "like a rocketship." I don't want a rocketship. I want a comfortable, reliable, DIYable vehicle that will take me where I want to go, at a low total cost of ownership. The newer vehicles fail on many of those accounts.

Scotty is a cheapskate and in his “5 best used cars to buy” video, those were all 2011-2013 cars. Of course my 2019 Camry won’t last 500k miles like the ones from the 90’s and early 2000’s but I still expect 200k out of it. I have a feeling that pretty soon, most cars will have the computer systems go out on them before the actual engines and transmissions go out.

And speaking of cheapskates, I thought my grandpa was bad until I saw Scotty. My grandpa was wealthy but cheaper than most poor people. He still bought all of his cars brand new cash in full, but they were base model Hondas or Toyotas and he’d keep them for 20 years. Scotty here buys used cars that are 10+ years old and keeps them for several years.
