Self Oil Change Bandwagon

Scotty, I want to get on the bandwagon of changing my oil myself.

1)  To jack up the vehicle, do you have a preference on using a floor jack and stands over ramps? If so, what is the reason.  I have not seen a video of you using ramps.

2)  How do I determine the crush washer size (i.e. 12M) and type (aluminum vs. copper?)?

I have a 2011 Nissan Titan with 119K miles.

Thanks

Bill

The staff at the auto parts store can provide information regarding the correct crush washer size.
The oil drain system that Scotty recommended as referenced by @Dad2LM2 is the ValvoMax oil drain valve. His video on YouTube  is entitled, ‘The Future of Oil Changes - New Invention’.

That’s it. Looked like a well made product, though I know a lot of people recommend just a standard drain bolt.

@Dad2LM2 I actually like the Furmoto device that you suggested, it being a single piece unit. Just would be concerned that it could be damaged more easily than a standard drain bolt. Don’t care for having to use, clean and store the second part of the ValvoMax device.

That’s a possible concern, especially if you go off road. You’d have to look at it in person. For my Sierra, the fumoto valve tucks in behind the sway bar; it’s very well protected. Don’t know how it would sit on a titan.

I use floor jacks and jack stands. That's the safest. As for the washers, I buy bags of the crush washers on Amazon and always put a new one on. Doesn't really matter as long as you get one. That's the right size. You throw them away anyway

I’m a proponent of Fumoto valves (or similar devices; seems like Scotty did a video about an oil change valve that is made in Houston). You have to install it correctly and ensure that it is well protected.  But makes changing your oil quick and easy. You might be able to squeeze under your Titan to change the oil without lifting it at all.

You already know the correct size for your truck, 12mm.  I prefer the composite washers over aluminum or copper.
