Should I add a zerk fitting to sealed lower ball joint.

Hi Scotty,

I have a 2003 Toyota Tundra SR5 TRD 4wd with an automatic transmission. It has 244,000 miles. I have no clue when the ball joints were last replaced.  Should I add a zerk fitting to my newly purchased Toyota lower ball joints, or install as is?

Thanks,

Matt

Unless there's something new I don't know about, I don't think you can add zerks to existing balljoints. You have to install a balljoint that comes with a zerk fitting.

Having a greasable balljoint will definitely make it last longer, but with 244k miles your balljoint may outlast the vehicle.

This model is prone to lower ball joint failure, but it's also prone to long life of at least twice the miles it has. The lower ball joint I bought from Toyota does not have a zerk, but I've seen others tap and add one to other sealed lower ball joints. Should I?

No. I wouldn't molest it. Use it until it wears out, and then buy a balljoint with a fitting.
