[Solved] Should I Follow Toyota’s Recommended Maintenance Schedule?

Scotty,

Long time listener, first time caller here.

Just bought a 2023 Toyota Corolla Hatchback SE. Bare bones, stock (if you don’t count the $3,000 of useless, non-negotiable dealer add-ons).

The recommended maintenance intervals don’t note any fluid changes or maintenance for the 1st 100k miles (aside from visual inspections, oil changes, & air filter replacement).

This is my first Toyota, so maybe I’m just naive of how well these cars are built. Do you recommend any preventive maintenance in addition to (or before) Toyota’s recommended maintenance interval?

*note: Commuter car for typical Dallas, TX city/highway driving (I.e., not for hauling the yacht or off-roading on Sonoran Desert dunes).

Cheers!

Kevin H.

Yeah don't listen to any of their crap. I would change the transmission fluid every 60,000 mi. Depending on the mileage you drive, you want to change the coolant like once every 6 years or so. And the same thing with the brake fluid. But of course change engine oil filter every 5000 mi of full synthetic oil. I wouldn't listen to some ridiculous figure they might have given you

You’re the man, Scotty!

I figured as much. Good sales pitch for Toyota—“see your mechanic less often” (and the car dealer more).

Funny that the recommended “maintenance” interval is 5K miles, but oil change only every 10K.

Warranty & Maintenance Guide (link below):
“Miles or Months?
Toyota recommends obtaining scheduled maintenance for your vehicle every 5,000 miles or six months, whichever comes first.
For example:
• If you drive 5,000 miles in less than six months, you should obtain maintenance at 5,000 miles - don't wait until six months.
• If at six months you have driven less than 5,000 miles, you should obtain maintenance at six months - don't wait until 5,000 miles.”
