Should I replace my failed transmission for a used one?

My 2000 automatic Honda Civic's transmission failed at 171k miles, is it worth getting a used transmission to replace it? It has new tires and has had a lot of work done to keep in in great shape over the years. My mechanic is good and affordable with labor.

Thank you!

A used transmission is going to be as bad or worse than what you have now.  Get a remanufactured unit with a warranty from a reputable company, TCI, Monster, Powertrain Products, etc.

Given the current shortage and high prices of used cars, you could very well come out ahead financially by repairing it and selling it  - or keeping it for a year or two until car prices are more normal. You probably wouldn't get much for it with a bad tranny.

All of this depends on the condition of the other parts of the car - things like oil consumption, creaky suspension, failed AC, body work needed, etc. change the equation. What's the rest of the car like? Would you keep driving it if the trans was working?

Hi! The interior and exterior is very well maintained, ac works, new tires, oil consumption is fine, immediately fixed any problems that came up. The only thing I can think of is the exhaust didn't sound great but my mechanic who checked it a few months ago said it was still fine at the time. And yes, if it worked we would 100% be driving it.

I also wanted to add the car did shake a bit because of the exhaust issue I believe.

is it worth getting a used transmission

Unlikely on a 22yo car, but did you price it out?
