Hi guys I have a Honda Civic 1996 with a d16a vtec engine mated to a 4 speed automatic transmission with 218k Km on it. The transmission has no problems at all whatsoever. It responds fast to throttle inputs, holds the gears very well(can even reach vtec thresholds and redline) and it does not feel sluggish. But my concern is that when going uphill, the power delivery feels sluggish and when you dont accelerate before going uphill, it loses power mid way and immediately shifts to first gear. But if the hill is very steep and did not accelerate before entering, the car will crawl uphill very slowly and the engine does not rev past 1.5-2k rpm. In those circumstances, i just leave the car in D4 or D3 because thats the only way I can access 1st gear and putting it in 2 will make things much slower. Am I doing something wrong or how do I make it climb better? Thanks in advance.

It definitely sounds like a air fuel problem so check and see if your air filter is clogged, check to see if your MAF sensor is dirty also it may be that your fuel pump is weak so have that pressure tested.
well I hate to bust your bubble but seems to me that the transmission is starting to wear out typical on one that's that old. But you could pray at something like cloud fuel filter weak fuel pump dirty fuel injectors something that doesn't give the engine full power but from your explanation it sounds more like a transmission problem
