Hi! I drive a 2012 Nissan Versa 6-speed manual with 108000 kms. Unfortunately the car didn't come with a spare key so I went to the dealership to get a new one cut. They came back to me claiming that the new key they made (they don't cut keys in house) doesn't fit in the current cylinder. So they'll want to order a new cylinder, and have new keys to be cut for it.
They say the blade on my current key blade might be too worn for the new cylinder. Once they have two new keys for it and the new cylinder+installation will cost me around 1100CAD (~870 USD).
Is there anything I can do to get a cheaper spare without all the new parts or am I stuck having to fork out a bunch of money for new keys? Am I being taken advantage of by the dealer? Thanks.
You are getting screwed by the dealer. Just go to a Locksmith, not a dealer.
+ 100
The dealer is trying to rip this guy off for probably hundreds of dollars in parts and labor for the sake of a ten dollar key from a competent locksmith.
Yup, it sounds dodgy alright..
If you can, remove the lock assembly from your glove compartment and take it to a reputable locksmith and tell them to make a key that works in this lock which should also work in your ignition. It might be easier to remove the glove box door first. Way easier than trying to remove a door or trunk lock mechanism. Why the glove compartment lock? In case your car originally had a valet key which won't unlock a glove box or trunk.
A 9 yr old car with just 100,000 odd kilometres, with a worn out key??
Sounds very fishy. As the others have suggested, try a locksmith first (who can make an immobiliser key).
I recommend keys express depending on where you live If there around there but they will come to you and cut and program keys on the spot
ya gotta love jap cars
they keep mechanics busy
go to a locksmith
