Squeaky “Wheeeeeeeee” Noise, First Car

Howdy, everyone! I wish I was half as knowledgeable about cars as most here are, but unfortunately I don’t have a mechanic friend or much experience. Please help me out here…

- My car’s a 2016 Subaru Crosstrek (I named her Cirrus), 4WD/AWD, assembled in the US.

- She’s been around for 7 years and has roughly 90k miles on it now.

- She often basks in the Florida sun and has been subject to a lot of speeding (not me, someone else) when she drives.

- The most “maintenance” she’s gotten were free maintenances by Subaru, liquid+filter changes, a couple battery replacements, and new brake pads. (Very minimal)

She has her fair share of front break pad usage issues before this noise appeared, but as my title implies, this noise is located roughly at the front of the vehicle, closer to the passenger side.

It only really speaks up when the speed is higher than 20 mph, and decreases in volume as she slows down, to the point of not hearing it at all when not pressing the gas. There’s no thumping/clunking noises, nor I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the transmission’s gear ratio from what I understand of it.

I can only guess it has to do with maybe transmission, the front tires (aka the breaks getting worse), or the engine… but I don’t have a sound machine of any sort.

I have researched from other Subaru car owners that pistons can be a problem if not addressed in their sedans, especially at higher speeds… but I don’t know if that applies considering she’s not very powerful compared to the WRX or even BRX, not sure about the Legacy.

The necessary fluids have recently been changed on it (all of them), so if there were any issues with any liquid being too low, I would think that would have been taken care of.

That should be all! Thanks for reading! Smile

Welcome new member.  A lot of things it could be.  Look up Scotty's video on how to find the source of a noise.  The one specific thing that comes to mind is wheel bearings, which are common problems on Subarus at that age and miles.  Scotty and others have lots of videos on diagnosing and fixing wheel bearing noises.

Also, look in the FAQ about posting links to pictures and videos.  If you can post a video with sound, that might be helpful.

Cheers!

Oh, and should it always have a “weeeeeeee” sound when the gas is being punched a bit harder?

That’s something that’s always been there, and I figured since she’s not a muscle car or just not very strong that it’s supposed to be normal. I could hear the noise from the back passenger seats of the car easily.

I admit though I’ve never heard such a thing in my parents’ previously leased cars before. Cirrus is fully owned, so maybe it’s just normal from use? Then again, I was trying to hold on for dear life mostly lol
