[Solved] Clunking noise when I turn to the right & steering wheel stiff

Is It normal when I am at idle, the gear in park or drive, and I am pressinge the brake, the steering wheel is a little bit harder to turn and it is not smooth. Its like there’s something preventing the steering wheel to turn. I also checked that the lower ball joints are hard stiff and hard to move. Is it possible that it is because of the ball joints?

There Is actually a “clunking noise” when I turn to the right. I just got a new pump and my rack rebuild. But when I am moving and turning right, the noise dis appears. The noise just comes out when Im at idle and at park while turning the steering wheel to the right.

It’s always a good idea to mention the year, make, model & mileage of your vehicle, in the opening post.

As @mountainmanjoe advised, it’s normal for the steering wheel to be harder to turn when you’re at standstill. The hard pavement resists the turning motion of the rubber tyres, and you’ll notice the steering wheel requires more effort to manipulate.

This effect is really pronounced in a car without power steering, with large tyres, where it’s physically difficult to turn the steering wheel from lock to lock.

If you hear noises, notice any pump leaks (in a HPS), or if your rack is leaking, it may cause the steering wheel to have ‘resistance’ while you turn the wheel, but then that’s a whole different issue.

Since you didn't mention any noises/leaks, odds are it’s normal behaviour.

If it wasn’t present before the new pump & rebuilt rack, I’d take it back to the shop & make them fix it.
Scotty recommends you use a brand new pump & rack as the rebuilt ones are often no good.

If they can’t fix it, you’ll need a good front end shop to diagnose the clunking. It could be the rack, but a pro will need to physically check it.

Its like there’s something preventing the steering wheel to turn

that something is moving pavement.

It's like trying to turn around while wearing skiis and standing still. It's a lot easier when you're moving.

So its normal?
