Hi Scotty,
I have a 1984 Toyota Celica GT-S. Rear wheel drive, manual transmission. I'm moving to another state and I'm planning on towing the Celica with a 1993 Toyota pickup.
My question is, can I tow the Celica with its all 4 wheels on the ground on the highway? If so, in addition to putting the car in neutral, do I need to remove the drive shaft as well? Anything else that I need to be careful about?
Really appreciate your help!!
Rent a car dolly, tow it backwards with rear tires on the dolly. Don’t want your transmission spinning freely that long. Even in neutral the output shaft will be spinning, or rent a car trailer from uhaul
Thanks for the response. If towing it backwards using a tow dolly, would I need to lock the steering wheel using the seat belt/an actual lock, or is it better to leave it?
If your going 1500 miles. Car trailer. No dolly. Believe it or not the rental isn’t that much different. Usually you tie off the steering wheel so it has a little play. But thats for short hauls. Didn’t realize you were going so far.
No, don't do it. That is way too far to have the drive wheels on the ground.
Thanks for the response. I'm actually looking at a trip over 1,500 miles so yeah definitely has to be something reliable.
Thanks guys for all the response. I really appreciate it. Considering the distance, I decided to ship the car, even though the price is kinda ridiculous these days. But at least I can have peace of mind.
Everyone please be safe.
What about just driving it?
I'm just by myself so that is not an option unfortunately
You could get an aluminum drive on car trailer. At that distance you want the whole car off the road. If you're going to be by yourself I think it's the safest way to go.
