Toyota-approved engine oil

Hello everyone!

Real curious, why does Toyota certify only one engine oil (by Exxon-Mobil), but it is not widely available for purchase?

From your experience, is there any difference using manufacturer's certified oil vs non-certified oil of same viscosity and type?

Cheers!

Nope, only use the correct viscosity, but any brand will do, Castro’s, Quaker State,

Penzoil. Etc......

It is just a market thing. You can use any oil (approved API) with the correct viscosity.

Look in your owner's manual.  It will list the rating.

Most new cars will say SAE ILSAC GF-6 0W-20.  And most major oil brands will have that rating on the jug.

If it says, SAE ILSAC GF-6B 0W-16, then you are limited until more companies get that product to market.

Betting the other oil brands aren't going to let Mobil 1 dominate for long.

It's OK to use standard brands of oil, make sure of the viscosity, and read the oil container to be sure it meets the specification noted in your owners manual, in the "specifications" section.
