Transmission has never been serviced since I took ownership. I'm aware of the risk that the transmission may start slipping if I drain the old fluid and place with fresh. I hope this doesn't sound stupid but oh well-
If I don't touch the existing fluid, but replace the filter frequently, at some point, wouldn't that be the equivalent of having replaced the old transmission fluid with new? At some point won't the filters have trapped the debris that was providing friction?

The filters obviously won't do anything about degradation of the fluid itself.
No. filters do not undo the physical and chemical changes that happen to transmission fluid. At 253k miles, your transmission is already beyond its average lifespan.
