Truck wont always start

I have a 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 with the 5.7 Hemi.  It is an automatic with about 114,000 miles.  My problem is the truck doesn't always start.  It will crank but with not start.  Eventually it will start and will run when it does.  Also the truck will cut off going down the road.  Sometimes the engine will shut off and the lightning bolt will come on on the cluster.  But it restarts when i stop the truck and turn the key.  Sometimes the truck will loose power but will not shut all the way off and will start running again on its own.  Like nothing happened.  Lightning bolt does not come in that that case.  Check engine light is on but I don't have a code reader.  Changed the fuel pump and fuel filter a few months back.  Also changed the crankshaft position senor.  Hooked up my buddy's code reader and he used that to learn the sensor to the crankshaft.  For some reason the sensor forgets but we did try a second sensor to ensure the fisrt one wasn't bad product.

1st, stop by an auto parts store. They'll read the codes for free.

The lightning bolt on the dash means that there is a problem with the electronic throttle control system in your vehicle.

If your battery was recently disconnected you may have to reset the electronic throttle control system.

  • Insert ignition key and turn to "ON" position but do not start the engine
  • Wait for all the warning lights to go out. The check engine light may remain on.
  • Slowly depress the accelerator pedal all the way to the floor.
  • Slowly release the accelerator pedal until it is all the way back up at the rest position.
  • Turn the ignition key to "OFF" position.
  • Start the engine and test the throttle to see if the engine will throttle up
  •
  • ...but definitely  have the trouble code(s) read. You need to know what the computer is trying to tell you
