Bought this $43,000 car 4 1/2 years ago with 31,000 miles for $26000 with a 50,000 mile warranty. I just had the timing belt, water pump, spark plugs, air filter, tranny fluid changed and front and rear brakes and rotors replaced (original). And a new rear control arm replaced. I paid an independent shop that mainly works on Hondas about $1850 for everything. (the Acura dealership wanted about $7,500!!)

Anyway, the vehicle runs like brand new, period.

1. What do you think about valve adjustment? Doesn't seem to need it, but I ordered a ThinkOBD100 to get more info. Will that tell me? How, what do you look for?

2.  Should I get a little kit to shut off VCM? How much will mileage drop? I get 23.9 overall averaging 31 mph running around the Twin Cities. Kinda strange, but this varies very little tank after tank. (Also, kind of a neat fact is that you can divide that into total mileage and get the total hours. 111,000 miles/31 mph = 3580 hours. The hour meter stops at 99 for some reason and renders it about useless.)

3. Is there anything else I should do at this time?

4. Twice I tried to use ACC position so I could charge my phone while running errands. Both times I returned 15-30 min later to a dead battery and had to replace battery both times. What's up with that?

Here are your answers.

  1. If it works fine then you could live with it.
  2. I wouldn't.
  3. Take care of the car because Honda and Acura's reliability goes back and forth.
  4. When you leave a car like that unattended or leave it for too long, it will drain the battery juice. I don't think you might have needed a second battery change; maybe the first if it was the original.

Regarding the VCM, I would disable that cylinder deactivation technology as soon as possible so you don’t have possible engine wear and tear or damage in the future.  See below for options:
