Vehicle care in extreme cold weather (Below 20s ~ 50s)

Hi Scotty & car brothers and sisters,

I've got my order to station at Fairbanks, Alaska a year back. Pretty good size town, with two big military bases around it. Getting only about 3 ~ 4 month of 'warm' weather (Above 30s up to 90s) within summer time and rest of 8 months of the year is winter that can go down to below 50s. I've been asking people around for good tips how to keep vehicle in good condition year around, as the temperature difference gets really deep from warm days and cold days.

They all have different tips and tricks, I even had a person said they place a warm blanket underneath of engine hood. Trickle charger was another one but some says this kills the battery over time and eventually shortens the life span.

I have 2013 Toyota Highlander with 3.5 V6 gas model, doing my engine oil change every 5K miles full synthetic, use bottle of iso heet every couple months to reduce water in my fuel tank (Winter time only), haven't done anything with transmission other than replace the fluid every 50k, checked with Toyota that my coolant is good down to below 60s, thinking to install trickle charger as my battery is getting weaker lately but I don't know what is enough..

I'd really appreciate any tips from anyone living in cold climate like Alaska or anyone experienced these kind of weather. And of course I'd really like to get Scotty's reply too if he has any tips for me.

Thanks guys!

You could install a block heater on your car to warm your engine prior to starting.

I live on a cold climate (Canada). I see a lot of cars with a block heater in my area. A car heater can reduce engine wear over time.
