Hi Scotty and folks,
I’m applying to incentives that possibly can cover $5000 for purchasing EV or Plug in Hybrid car. I know many people say just buy Toyota Prius but I’m also interested in Ford C-Max since it’s more affordable. Should I just look for Toyota Prius or is there any recommendations for buying a used hybrid car? Also what mileages should I look for when I buy a hybrid car? Like Under 60,000 mil?
Thank you!
If you plan to keep for a long time and put as much mileage as possible on it I would re-think buying a hybrid. What you might save in fuel you will pay in costly repairs as they age and have issues. If you do get a hybrid, only look at Toyota Priuses since they Toyota makes the best hybrids (in terms of reliability and longevity). Generally, they are good until around 150,000-200,000 miles before the batteries and hybrid system needs to be addressed, and also finding a competent mechanic that can work on hybrids will be another challenge (and being a specialist will cost more, too). I would stick to a conventional vehicle (non-hybrid) if you plan to keep long term.

Wow, thank you for the in-depth information and tips! If I want to use incentives, I will look for just Toyota.
General rule of thumb says that you should not but a used hybrid car unless it is very low mileage and you do not want to keep it for a long time.
I would only stick to Toyota products for hybrid, not even Honda. Forget about Ford.
Ok, thanks for the insight! I guess I am going to look for Toyota..
Get a Toyota Hybrid you can afford. They have been doing hybrids for 20+ years. Time tested.
I don’t recommend any other hybrids as used vehicles.
If you were buying new, I’d take a chance on Honda. It’s like a hydrogen electric car except it runs on gas. Totally different than older Honda hybrids.
Thank you for the advice! Yeah I think I will check Honda hybrids and Toyota prius!
What to look for in a used Prius?
If you can, check the health of the hybrid battery. There are a few apps on the market that can help (with the us if an adapter). Some deals can be found with higher mileage Priuses with good batteries.
Obviously a lower mileage Prius takes out some of the guesswork.
I see.. Thanks for the tips!
