Hi,

I'm looking to buy a used SUV such as Honda CRV, Toyota RAV4, Lexus NX, Subaru Crosstrek and Forrester for 2015 or 2016. I'm looking at all the car problems/recalls and I don't know if I should choose from the models listed or I should look for something else. I want to buy a reliable vehicle that is not overly expensive, AWD or 4WD because I live in Canada and snow banks, slushy roads and icy conditions is part of life for 6 months of the year. I like cars that are fun to drive and I currently drive an 2001 Audi a4 quattro that is falling apart. I don't know anything under the hood and I would really appreciate any help I can get.

Newer volvos will give you nothing but problems. They look cool and are fast, without a doubt. But they are not good cars. Volvo was bought out by a Chinese company a few years ago and ever since then their quality and engineering has plummeted. I would strongly strongly advise a good used Lexus! It will be a lot cheaper and will be a solid vehicle. Don’t let 7+ years scare you away, these things age at half the rate of volvos. Look into a good used LX or GS series on facebook marketplace or even craigslist. Be sure to do a carfax check. Dealers will sometimes have them but it will cost more. Hope this helps! Scotty would agree, I may be quoting him actually

@subawoo
I agree with this. Volvos are not close to what they used to be. If you are set on getting one lease a brand new one. That way you don’t pay for any repairs and maintenance.

Lexus has fantastic luxury SUVs. And they last a long time.

Toyota's are not bad to work on but they're generally extremely expensive so good luck finding one another good price realize you are looking at SUVs which are the most prized and highly price vehicles out there you might think of sedans instead like a Toyota Camry that you can get a much better deal on

2007-2011 CRVs, or toyota Rav4s, highlanders.

for reliability Lexus, Toyota and Honda, for performance Audi or BMW. Volvo is a nice middle ground 🙂

I'm not scotty but he will say the Subaru in this case. That GM is a pile of junk

Subaru will outlast that equinox 3x. Equinox is a 120k vehicle before it will fall apart.  Might have some maintenance on the Subaru but it will easily go 250k.  Change the oil, coolant, etc and you'll be happy.

My daughter is going to buy a 2020 suv and was thinking about the Rav4, I am helping her with her decision and liked the Rav4 over the Honda crv.  But now have read very good reports on the Mazda CX 5 so maybe that is the direction I should tell her to consider. What is your opinion ?

@ellis

Well, … just me opinionated:

I say, test drive all three. Yes. Primarily, … there is a big difference how each drives, … puts one at ease.

RAV4: … a Maytag on wheels. Not very reassuring. Lacks directional sense. Requires constant driver corrections. Annoying. Very loud when briskly accelerating. Transmission, … transmission mostly very confused - keeps hunting for a higher gear, endlessly! Fuel economy as advertised. [Disclosure, … a family member owns ‘19 model, bit over 32,000 km - no mechanical issues, so far.]

CRV: … if only it was still powered by that 2.4 litre, … now no longer available, engine, … and that CVT-feeling contiguous invasion [Disclosure: … I drive ‘10 CRV - no mechanical issues whatsoever for last 10+ years.

CX-5: … Zoom-Zoom! I’m not sure if they still use this line, … [Disclosure: … my summer driver is ‘04 Miata - darn two shifter rubber bellows: … just watch those for rips, … replace often, especially the one bolted on to the transmission turret, … but I digress grossly, forgive me.]

Bottom line: … just choose the one that makes you feel most comfortable, safe, … and at ease!

Best,

F.S.

Ellis, thank you for asking.

I'll give you my opinion from personal experience. I would have a difficult time going against the RAV 4. I currently have a 2012 Toyota Highlander Hybrid with 158k on it. Toyotas are absolutely bullet proof. Mechanically, cosmetically, interior materials...these things just do not wear out. With the improvements in the RAV 4 appointment wise, these are a very nice option in the smaller SUV market.

Mazdas are a fairly solid vehicle, but they aren't in the same league as Toyota. Neither is the Honda...but it's close.  My choice would be Toyota, then Honda and lastly, Mazda. They're all good but the Toyota is the pick of the litter.

@aestroh55
Thanks Alan and more convinced on a Rav 4

Only thing is that both Honda and Toyota have relatively new gen. engines (and transmission and TNGA platform too in case of Toyota) and they've had lots of issues (1.5L Honda oil dilution problems and 8 speed Direct Shift Toyota; Scotty also mentioned both; just search for "toyota 8 speed transmission issues"). I would not have recommended Mazda over Toyota or Honda 3 years ago as last generation vehicles from the last 2 manufacturers were much more tried and tested at that time; still true for many models such as 4Runner and V6 Honda engined cars).

Mazda Skyactiv engines and transmission have been unchanged since 2012 (very advanced for that era and still far ahead of most competition) and have a much better track record. Interiors are also far better (esp. in area of soft-touch plastics) as Mazda is not trying to direct well-heeled buyers who want nicer touches towards Lexus or Acura.

Mr. Ranger is right.

I'll also add to stay away from GM, Nissan, Ford, and Hyundai.

Since SUV's are heavy vehicles, I'd say look for 6-cylinder engines for better gas mileage and less straining.

Good luck

I'm looking for a good suv that's fairly cheap that will last me a long time. Preferably something below 2010, good gas mileage, and little to no problems.please leave the car brand, and year. Thank you.

@bryan1282
Toyota 4Runner from any year is a great choice. Highly durable and reliable.

Hello,

I think you may need to elaborate a little, do you require a 4x4, Auto or Manual, and rear door access, tailgate (Mercedes ML) or 50/50 split (Range Rover)

All the Best.

@dvkala
I'm looking for a personal small or midsize suv to drive from work to home. I'm not looking for an awd but mainly fwd and I need an automatic.

Toyota so, Honda are good but a little more troublesome, Subaru, you will be on a first name basis with your mechanic in no time.
All the Best.

Hey Scotty we are looking to purchase a new luxury vehicle and so far we really like the new 2020 Lincoln corsair it is awd and has a 2.0t 4 cylinder engine is there anything we should be concerned about with this vehicle? also this vehicle is 42k after mark downs and rebates what else could be get in this segment of vehicles that is as luxurious as the Lincoln for the same money thanks for your time!

I would not buy a Lincoln with that tiny engine, the car is too big for that small engine

I’ve been watching your channel for a while Scotty, and have been considering buying a new car, but I’m really specific on what type of car I want to buy!

Avoid European. Endless money pits as Scotty would say.

I'm deciding to buy my first SUV like Nissan rogue 2015 or GMC Terrain 2015 what do you think about those two thank you

Hello Scotty! I love your videos, they r very informative. I want to buy a reliable mid size SUV and know that Japanese made cars r the best, however I’d like to ask you about the new 2020 Lincoln Aviator and Lincoln in general. Do u think it’s a good made vehicle and company? Would u invest in a Lincoln in this day and age?

thanks

0

I would not I would still go Japanese

Scotty, which used SUV should I buy: a 2014 Subaru Forester with 58,000 miles, or a 2016 Chevy Equinox with 72,000 miles?
