I know that the subject of motor oil is very controversial, but I want to ask you all: If you are going to buy the oil for your next oil change and you find on the shelf Mobil 1 and Motul 8100 next to each other at the same price, which one would you buy?

Thanks for your opinions

You didn't mention the application you would be using the oil for,  however I would go with Mobil 1.

(personally I only use Castrol)

It's not a question of what I would use it for, but which one you would buy for your intended use.

Got it, Mobil 1 would be my choice.

Motul makes good oil and is well known in Europe. 8100 is a series of different high performance oils with different specs, just as Mobil 1. I would not choose oil based on the name, but the specifications stated on the bottle.

You are right, i know that.

If they both met the manufacturer requirements for my engine, I would buy the cheaper one.

As long as it meets the viscosity and specifications outlined in the owner’s manual, then it doesn’t matter.  But, personally, I’ve been using Mobil 1 in most of my vehicles, so I’d go with that since that’s been working fine  for me all this time.

Mobil 1 has been out for decades and is a known quantity. Never heard of the other one, so I'd go with Mobil 1.

Motul is more popular in Europe. But it started as an American company in 1853, now it is French.

Why does everyone prefer Mobil 1? I would like to know your reasons.

That's why I was curious regarding the application you were using it for.

My understanding of Motul 8100 is that it was created more for larger displacement types of engines with higher HP to displacement ratios.

Mobil 1 is a more balanced formulation for most vehicles.

You can also google Mobil 1 vs Motul 8100 and there are a number of sites that have tested and given their respective opinions on the oil's pros and cons.

Thanks!

Between the two, I’d go Mobil1 only because I’ve used a bunch of that stuff in the past and never have used Motul.

FWIW, like Scotty but decades later, I grew up on Castrol and will use it by default if it is the cheapest.

But I usually go with whatever big brand is on sale where I am shopping. And it usually ends up to be Mobil1.

I'm using mobil 1 myself now, but I've heard good things about motul, and motul meets many high standards of European and American brands. And it's cheaper where I live, so I wanted to know more opinions.
