Why does my passenger side motor mount keep failing?

Hi all. My 2009 Pontiac Vibe GT (Toyota 2.4l engine) with 189k miles has vibrated at idle since I've owned it. I recently had the engine rebuilt-finished early February of this year. All three engine mounts and the transmission mount were shot, so I've been replacing them periodically since then. I recently replaced the final one-the passenger side top "torque" mount. After which, the car was vibration free and perfectly smooth-for about an hour. The car reverted to vibrating just as it had-no better or worse. The new mount had failed. It was sagging and bulging from the rubber insulator. I decided to order another mount and try again. This time, the mount failed immediately-as soon as I let the engine down from the jack. I took the car to my mechanic and he said the other mounts were good (he installed one of them.) He also said he didn't know what to tell me other than four cylinder engines are hard to keep from vibrating. That may be true, but it doesn't explain how or why the first installation fixed the problem, if only briefly. Both mounts were the correct model, OEM Toyota, and installed correctly to the best of my knowledge. I am beyond frustrated at this point. Any ideas? Thanks in advance,

~Jonas

Do you have all the mounts changed at the same time? If you did only one at a time the bad ones could have caused the good one to fail earlier causing the cycle of premature failure to continue. If the mount failed instantly than either it was defective or not installed correctly.

I doubt the both mounts were defective-they were both genuine Toyota mounts. You may be right about the bad mounts ruining the good mounts, but I couldn't afford to replace them all at once. I'd think a four month time span would be okay to get them all replaced, but maybe not. I guess I'll take it somewhere to get a second opinion-maybe just tell them it's vibrating and see what they think. Thanks.

You should change them all at once.
