| Assuming you have full synthetic oil at present, your driving conditions must be pretty harsh for the oil to already deteriorate, after just 6400 kms. If it was my car, I’d change it (oil & filter) right now at 5000 kms with fresh full synthetic oil. Also, I’d send a sample of the old oil to a lab which tests oil to get a health report and see if your onboard oil change indicator is accurate or not. If you’re running mineral oil (or synthetic blend), change it right now at 5000kms and moving forward use full synthetic oil (preferably). Congratulatio ... | |||||
| Should I perform an engine flush my 2010 Toyota Yaris? | 37Relevance | 3 years ago | komodoris | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| Should i flush my Toyota Yaris 2010 2NZ-FE 1.3L motor oil after check engine and oil pressure light on? Hello, My car is due to motor oil and filter change as it reached 5Km (5.6Km now), i've been noticing a drecrease in the leves when i check the stick and when i drain the oil. I went to check the exhaust for white or smely fumes, but it doesn't present any of both symptoms. When i start the car, it does release some very light white fume, but it also doesn't smell like oil, more like gasoline, it fades after few minutes or seconds depending of the weather or the time the car was sitting even if the car is idling. Context (1st oil change) 2 years ago, i ran the car for months with a very heavy usage without any maintencance, until a day i was getting the oil pressure light/check engine light showing and few noises that seemed like bad lubrication and bad oil filter, that's when i checked the oil level and it was very low. The problem was that i was very far away from home and had to move the car to service it, i've added a little bit of oil i had back home and took the car from the far place it was before. After that i parked the car for months until i was able to replace the parts i thought were bad like oil, oil filter, air filter, spark plugs and more. I think a month later or less, i was having problems with intermetent noises coming from the carter that at first made me think the oil filter was faulty or the replacement procedure i've made was faulty (after the oil change i heard the noises, just thought they were the prolonged used of low oil, which was in part, but they went away after a few runs), that also made the oil pressure light to turn on and off as long as the noise was adutible and the car started to loose speed at the same time. (2nd oil change) After a week i had enough and decided to park the car again and called a mechanic to check it, explained to him the missusage of the vehicle and the after procedures. He just asked me to get a new oil filter, more motor oil and some silicone. He then took out the carter, and it had a lot of hald solid pieces that cloged the internal filter, not allowing the oil to flow sometimes (the noises), he started to get the most he could out the filter and after that he put everything together again and replaced the old oil filter and motor oil and just like that the noise and the oil pressure/check engine light disapeared. After the 1st oil change, whenever i changed the oil the volume was always inferior to the original. That 2nd oil change still had the right amount because i didn't use the car long enough between both changes. Until few months ago the car was just fine, until it started to halt randomly and i had to take it to 2 different people during this time. The first one performed the usual motor oil, oil filter, throtle body and other basic components maintenance, ran a scan with his expensive tool and found nothing wrong and then i had problem with the water pump making noise which i asked him to replace and the random halt didn't go away, i then moved to another person. I went to a very expensive auto shop, and asked for a diagnosis with their machine expecting a report mentioning few errors, they did and found nothing wrong, just my front right ABS sensor which i already knew because the ABS light was on back then. Then the 2nd guy, again, i explained what i was experiencing with the car and he then ran a diagnosis on his own and found nothing wrong again. Then, he sugested for us to execute a step-by-step procedure starting from the ignition system then move to other parts if it wasn't sucessfull which i agreed, it turns out it was the fuel pump, dirty filter and tank (we thought so), a week later the random halt reemerged and i went back to him, he then ran another scan and found nothing, then we moved to the sensors, a cable from the sensor near the V-Belt was touching the belt and it exposed the wires, he fixed that and also asked his asssitent to remove the VVT sensor wich broke during the procedure because it was half stuck (dry oil) and probably his assistent damaged it the last time i was there because i saw him taking that same sensor and inspecting/cleaning, it also had some dry oil restin on the side of the timing belt, then proceeded to take the motor cover and voila, the gasket was stiff and half broken and had little bit of silicone (from a very old procedure to replace that gasket), the parts inside looked shiny and lubricated but in some parts you could see a thin layer of dry oil with a light yellow/brown color, which may have happened during the moment i was usng the car with very low oil. I had to buy a new VVT and gasket, and since then the car is runing just fine, the rest that came after that was just the fuel pump going bad after a very short time of usage, which i had to replace with an used from a original scrap and now i don't have any random halt issues anymore. As far as i can seen, maybe i was very lucky (can't tell yet) and the damage done was not permanent. But now i'm thinking again, what if the piston ring is stuck the same way the VVT sensor was? Just few days ago i've cleaned the oil Pressure valve, there was a significant amount of sludge, but it was still moving just fine, i still need to check and maybe clean the VVT oil filter tho' but as for now i'm concerned with the piston rings. If it's stuck/dirty and burning even a small amount of oil, i'm worried it may get worse and start damaging the cylinder block. Therefore the my doubt about the flush which i also know it not a easy decision to make, since it can create a whole new series of problems on old engines like mine. | |||||

| I put full synthetic oil in my car since I bought it. Even though Kia uses synthetic blend. Scotty told me if I wanted to use full synthetic then have the oil changed at 2,000 miles and then never go back to synthetic blend after using full synthetic. I have only used Mobil one full synthetic in this car. | |||||

| If the vehicle has used conventional oil for its lifespan then the consensus is to continue using conventional. The reason for this is because synthetic oil has a high flow rate at the same viscosity as the same conventional oil. So say you use 5W-30 conventional oil. The same 5W-30 oil in synthetic flows better. This can result in the premature leaking of various engine seals especially on V8 engine assemblies. As conventional oil gets phased out the consensus among mechanics will most likely be to stick with synthetic oil as the vehicle now come with synth ... | |||||

| Hi I've got an 06 toyota solara 4 cylinders 128k miles, it uses 5w30 oil, just got the car and this is my first oil change after 4k miles, the mechanic said it has been using regular oil, can I switch to full synthetic? Is this advantageous? Or should I stick to the regular oil and change it every 3k miles, they did say synthetic oil change will cost me about 60 bucks per oil change, will full synthetic make my car run better and engine last longer or does it just double the time I have to go in for oil change? Thank you for your responses | |||||

| ... telling me from the conventional blend to a synthetic blend (not 100%). The label hardly changed so I didn't notice the difference. In fact according to Castrol's site they no longer make a conventional oil in this weight anymore. These days the car is mostly a "garage queen" and doesn't see many miles anymore. In fact a local dealer has it on their showroom floor along with my TSX since they have so few new cars. I think I've put on about less than 100 miles on it since I noticed the change to synthetic. In my other 2 cars I use Mobil 1 (5w-30) full synth ... | |||||

| ... synthetic oil. But with the shortages of many things, the only Mobil 1 full synthetic i could find was the high mileage oil. The information printed on the container indicated that the oil was designed to be used in motors exceeding 75,000 miles and among the benefits listed said that it helped to restore the seals. Now, this car does not burn, consume or leak oil and the oil is still fairly clean at each 5,000 mile change. I have since read online that once you switch to a high mileage oil, you must continue to use a high mileage oil for the remaining li ... | |||||

| Due to the high operating temperature of turbochargers it is best to use synthetic oil with a turbo. That's the advice given to me by a lubrication engineer when I worked in the R&D center of major oil company many moons ago, (It makes sense since synthetic oil resists breakdown and coking at high temperatures better than conventional oil.) I would also use full synthetic in the Corolla. Using a car infrequently actually qualifies as severe service and the synthetic oil will handle that better. synthetic oil is better overall and is not all that much m ... | |||||

| ... week, good to know if any oil is being burned/lost and what it looks like, etc. I use Mobil1 in all my cars, it's a good oil, there is some back and forth as to if its really a full synthetic but that is the topic of conversation for another thread. Just about any commercially available oil is good oil, Castrol, Pennzoil, they're all good oils. I change my oil twice a year on my cars, I run about 4000 miles on an oil change, so about 8000 miles/year on each car (we have 3 cars in the family). I would never go beyond 6000 or 7000 miles on synthetic oil, that ... | |||||

| My mechanic recommends Amsoil synthetic oil he probably makes a tidy profit on it. should I switch to this synthetic in your opinion as far as I know, OEM's switched to synthetic transmission fluid by the early 2000's Dexron VI is synthetic, and I'm pretty sure Toyota WS is too. is the mileage too high? 100k is not high | |||||

| Yes, it will make it leak worse. You're going to have to fix it anyway, then you could use a synthetic blend. My personal opinion is that these so called "synthetic blend" oils have so little synthetic in them that it doesn't make any difference. It's just a marketing ploy to get you spend more money. Why don't these oil companies ever tell you how much of this "blend" is synthetic and mineral? | |||||
| RE: Synthetic or Mineral oil ? | 32Relevance | 5 years ago | Th3kr1s | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| Like mentioned by James, the only reason it could start leaking from synthetic oil is due to its higher detergent additives it has compared to the conventional oil. A lot of older cars develop gunk and sludge which block leaks from being able to seep out of the seals and gaskets. Switching to synthetic could remove the sludge and build up after a couple of oil changes and hence you would possibly start seeing leaks. It has nothing to do with the viscosity of the oil it’s just the additive package in the oil. Also, just because you are putting synthetic oil ... | |||||

| My shop uses Mobil 1, mostly full synthetic for the majority of what we do. All of the advice mentioned here has been good. Joe is right. Any engine, whatever the mileage, will benefit from using synthetic oil. If it is a 200k engine that has never used it before, it can still see some benefits. However, Alex is also correct in that you do not want to swap to synthetic in a car that is high mileage and has only been fed regular its whole life. The reason is not because it isn't beneficial though. synthetic oil runs thin and if you have an old car ... | |||||

The latest oil filter I bought is the Purolator Boss. I might try out the Frame Ultra synthetic oil filter next since it's available at Walmart and scored well in filtration testing.
