Scotty,

Been watching your videos for years and absolutely love them. Recently I've come across an issue that has be completely stumped.

About a month or two ago I sent my car to the garage because I just couldn't bleed the brakes to save my life, figured okay maybe I'm doing something wrong, have a garage check it out. Turns out the back bleeders were stripped and the front ones completely snapped off (prior to me owning it). They claimed they needed to keep the driver side door open to keep the brakes depressed (I'm assuming to check for a leak), but the brake system is hydraulic so no need for that, but whatever. Go to pick the car up the next day and it was dead. They jump started it from the positive post under the hood and the ground on the strut.

About a week later (I don't drive much) took the car to the store and on the way back it completely died, from your videos over the years did some basic testing and turns out they somehow managed to fry the alternator. Ok, no big deal, put in a new alternator and battery. A little while later the car won't start, no big deal, get the jump box and give it a go. Nothing.

Figure maybe it's the alternator - test that and the battery, nothing is wrong. Got a power probe and tested everything, all the fuses, wiring, starter, power to ecu and so on - nothing appears to be wrong. When turning the key to the "on" position, no yellow lights come on ex; check engine, oil, anti theft, etc. only the red lights.

Put it on the scan tool - some $80 one from Autozone and according to the scan tool absolutely nothing is wrong, it's stating that everything is in perfect functioning order.

I'm assuming it's the ECU that someway somehow managed to either die or get fried somehow, but I would love your input prior to taking it to a shop to see if there's anything I might of missed or not. Also instead of taking it to a shop, do you have any recommendations on a "pre-programmed ECU" or is there a scanner / flasher that I could use to reprogram it myself?

there's no such thing as pre-programmed, and no it's not something a DIYer can do.

But look at simpler things before jumping to replacing a >$1,000 ECU.

ignition switch, anti-theft, starter, starter relays, etc ....

Troubleshooting steps are in our FAQ.
