[Solved] 1995 Mercury Cougar Cruise Control Diagnostics

Hello Scotty,

I have a 1995 Mercury Cougar with 4.6L V8 that the Cruise Control has stopped working in.  Original owner with no accidents or anything like that which could have messed it up.  It just stopped working one day.  I'd like to know if you can get a copy of Ford's Cruise Control Diagnostics Procedures and get it to me so I can do the testing myself.  I think Ford calls it Speed Control in the Manual.  I've seen videos of testing things like the steering wheel buttons and other things, but none for my year Cougar or its body year range, but I don't know where things like the Servo and such are.  I don't have an OBD2 Scanner, but I have a Multimeter (which I've seen used in the videos) and lots of experience with electronics since 1973 from the Navy and afterward.  If you can help me out with the Procedure, I should be able to take it from there.  I'm retired with little income, but I'm willing to reimburse you if the Procedure costs you.  Maybe you already have a copy of it?

I love your YouTube videos and watch everything you post (except things that you remove) every day since having found you a few months ago.  I'm hoping this is where you get the questions that you answer in your videos, but if not, please tell me where that is.  Thank you for everything you do for us!

I'm making a big assumption that the Cougar's cruise control system is similar if not the same as a Mustang or a Crown Vic on a 1995 4.6L V8. There is a pinpoint diagnostic for Mustangs you might find helpful here http://www.paladinmicro.com/pmicro.php?frm=documents/SpeedControl-01.htm

I'm not sure where the speed control actuator is located on your car. On the Mustangs it is inside the drivers side wheel well and the plastic fender liner must be removed for access. My Chilton's repair manual for 1994-2004 Mustangs doesn't go in depth on trouble shooting but it mentions that earlier models have a vacuum hose connected to the "cruise control servo" and says to make sure the hose is connected securely.

Scotty is right once again about parts availability Too. You might find some used on e-bay or a salvage yard. I really don't think trying to fix it is worth the hassle quite honestly.

Thank you so much! I don't know what happened to the Like button on your reply or I would certainly click it, but I do love it. I can go to the Ford dealership here and ask about the locations of all related parts by giving them the VIN number. Testing the Vacuum Hose and any others in the Cruise Control system is something I wanted to do. I'll copy the webpage and save it to the same document that I copied your post to so I'd always have all of it.

My Haynes 1989-1997 Thunderbird/Cougar book doesn't cover much, either. When I bought the car new, I ordered the complete Official Ford Repair Manual, but it must have been left at the dealership when I let them borrow it. That would really be nice to have now! I'll ask if they still have it when I go to the Parts Department to ask about locations. There was recently a '95 Cougar in a salvage yard here that I got some parts from, so if it's still there, I could see if any parts I need are still on it. If not, they'll contact me when another compatible Cougar, Crown Vic or other (I know there's at least one more car and one truck) hits any of their lots in my state and I can order the parts and have them sent to the one here. I don't remember a Mustang being on the compatible list, but the procedure is likely close enough. It's certainly better than nothing!

I have a repair shop here that I love and trust as much as I would Scotty if I could have him and they are willing to take it on after having done other repairs, but if I can do it myself, the time and effort will be worth it. I'll let you know how it works out. Thanks again and Happy Holidays.

the up arrow up-votes a reply.

I looked through my data system but unfortunately it does not include that information. And truthfully if you had a bad module they don't make them anymore.

Thanks for the reply! OLD GUYS RULE replied below after you and gave a link for the procedure for a '95 Mustang and mentioned where the Actuator is on it and that there's a Vacuum Hose on the Servo, which I wanted to check for leaks because it could be dry rotted or cracked. I know that the '95 Crown Vic has parts in common, so all of that helps. You're the best!

You are quite welcome, I'm happy to have helped. Please do let me know how it goes. Good luck.

I hit all Up Buttons and changed the Checkmark to yours. Thanks again!

I saw some kind of magic going on there. Thank you and thanks to MMJ if he had something to do with it.
