2004 Ford Crown Victoria LX - Steering binding issue

Hi,

I recently acquired a 2004 Ford Crown Victoria LX (non-police) with 54,000 miles. This car was partly stripped and left to die outside under a tree. I have the car up and running and cleaned up. It is a great car overall.

One problem I am having is that when turning the steering wheel tot he right or the left before you get to 90 deg. either way there is a odd feeling in the wheel that something does not feel right. When driving, on turns it feels like the steering wheel is going to bind up stop turning. I can't see anything obvious, no whine from the power steering pump or other sounds. The car drives straight and true.

Thanks

I followed the steps in the video. It improved the main binding issue, but the steering is still not smooth but is not as rough as before.

Ideas on next steps on how to diagnose the issue?

Scotty recommends flushing it a few times in a recent video at 07:55 -

Please report back if still not fixed.

The joints in the lower steering shaft are highly known to go bad especially if you live in a wet/winter environment. You can see the short shaft when you open the hood and look down where the driver side wheel well cover is. This is the shaft that connects from the rack to the shaft that comes through the firewall. Those tend to easily corrode and go bad. Sometimes, you can spray silicone into the joints and that will help if it isn't completely shot yet. In any case, you'll want to get this fixed quickly before you lose steering control. You can replace these yourself and there are tutorials on YouTube. I often spray my steering shaft joints with silicon or WD40 as a preventative measure.
