- My friend is retiring out of the country and will be passing his car off to me. It’s a 2004 Lexus RX330 with 150k. I recently had it for two weeks and runs great, except it start overheating in traffic in 80 degree weather. Added coolant and overheating continued, but no leaking visible over the next few days and coolant remains in tank. Am I inheriting a ticking timebomb or is the issue worth looking into more because hey, it’s a free mid-2000s Lexus and I think if treated right it could go to 250k

You need to check all the components of the cooling system; radiator, cap, hoses, thermostat, heater core and temperature sensor or sending unit, as well as cooling fans or fan clutch depending on what you have, and most importantly, the water pump.

I had this exact car and it started running hot around 170k. My specific issue was the thermostat thankfully and replaced it. My sister is using it now and still doing well at 205K miles. I got it around 80K and had no trouble at all, just routine maintenance. Awesome car.
