Hi Scotty and Community,
I'm looking at this 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 Crew Cab SLT 4x4 5.7 V8 Hemi with 152,000miles, it's a 5 speed automatic. Are these solid pickup trucks, will this truck last? I know you rag on similar Chryslers from the era. I'm just looking for a 2nd/3rd car for winter snow driving, off roading, hauling things from the big box stores, hauling materials, moving, or towing when I get a trailer RV or something else down the line. I'm upgrading from a 1996 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4x4 manual 5 speed.
It's on craigslist and I've gotten smoking deals with private sellers before, two years ago I got 2011 BMW 535i M Sport RWD Manual 6 speed with 42,000 miles for $17,500. What do you think I should offer for this truck, looks pretty clean besides a torn drivers side bottom seat cover which can be replaces for about $80.
Thanks!
Are you confident you wanna do this?
What are your other options?
Whats wrong with your ‘96 Cherokee?
I'm not tied to or set on this truck, I'm just throwing it out there and would like one in the future for comfort over the tired Jeep, and the additional capability and towing capacity. I don't need this truck right now at all.
The Cherokee has 230,000 miles so and is having difficulties going into gear. It seems to slip in at stop after REVing up a bit and letting off the accelerator or while driving after accelerating and letting the REVs drop to around where it's more REV matched, maybe the syncros are worn out or it just needs a new transmission mount perhaps cause it does it from idle from time to time too (getting into reverse has always been a problem for the entire life of the Jeep).
The Jeep also makes a thumping sound when dropping the clutch aggressive at higher RPM from a stop. I don't need to get rid of the Jeep right now at all, it's totally drivable (for me at least) and because I've got Pirellis P Zero's on the BMW I can't drive the car below 45F ambient temp without potentially damaging the tire compound.
Right, if I were you, I’d fix/replace the Jeep’s clutch/transmission & continue using it. They were built really well, back in 1996..
Rather than look at the Ram, I’d recommend getting the Tundra/older F-150 instead.
Do not get the Ram 1500: see below at 10:11 by Master Mechanic The Car Wizard:
