Is a 2006 Ford Mustang with 80k miles a good vehicle for my young new driver? Should I be concerned that it's rear wheel drive for him? I am in Southern Wisconsin.
My main concerns would be:
1. Insurance cost - I hope you are putting him on your policy because otherwise it will be astronomically expensive.
2. Speed - The V6 is just fast enough to get someone who doesn't know what they are doing hurt. This comes down to if you feel he is ready for the responsibility.
3. Modifications - It can become a money pit if he falls in love with it and starts modifying it.
The V6 can burn regular fuel, makes about 200HP, and is pretty reliable if maintained well. I wouldn't overpay for it if it were me, so be sure you check the price out before buying and avoid salvage title junk.
I would go with a slower, safer, more reliable car if it were me but it isn't. So if you are set on doing it, know that tires are expensive and it was built as a fun car, not a reliable 200k mile commuter car. Go in with realistic expectations.
Fast cars at Young age are major cause of accidental death in usa.
Mustang below 2010 were hella reliable if maintained and baby properly. The only down side was the suspension. The suspension on those mustang were uni instead of being individual on all side. So going on drag race or going on way 75% chances you child might hit wall or lose control of that car.
So if you want my opinion For that price get civic si. Those are safe more reliable and fun to drive. Only down side they are not fast as mustang.
If your gonna say if why not buy new ones don't.
They are Chinese garbage.
Cheaply made
Break down really fast
Crapoy transmission
Endless money pit
EcoBoost is the worst of them all
6 Cyl Ford Mustang 2006 does not drive any faster than a Civic. He does not want a Civic. I don't care for Honda.
Since you mentioned V6 they are reliable but not as fast as v8 and have horse power of 199 I did the Dino test on of those models those 210hp Is for marketing. How much is the dealer is asking ?
I wont recommend pay more then $5000
But remember that it will need alot maintenance to last
Premium gas
Premium sports tires
Oil change
In this economy and car market I'm not sure where we'd find one for 5k? Maybe 8k for an 06 with 80k miles on it.
True but since you ain't got no choice left I say go for it and buy it but remember to get it inspected and road tested before handing over the cash.
And also
Make sure to last it longer
Use premium gas
Premium tires
And if possible install speed limiter in his mustang because those uni suspension can be dangerous. Many owners including my self when had it modded the suspension for safety
I would not do that. Get him/her a Civic if you want a sporty car.
We aren't looking at Honda, don't want one. The 2006 Ford Mustang is a 6 cylinder, so it doesn't drive as fast.
The Mustang V6 isn't fast, doesn't mean your son won't drive fast. The Mustang is an American symbol of fast. 70 mph in 45 mph zone is fast. A Corolla can do that too.

I posted the link separately to get you clear idea of what I meant my suspension
