2006 Jeep Commander/4wd LOW

Hey everyone,

So previously I reached out and asked if I should get a jeep commander. Mixed messages but I agreed to another test drive, I looked under the car and didn't see any leaks and everything including the transmission shifted really smooth. However, after the test drive and we got done with everything there was a message that said "transmission" hot or something like that. Do I need to worry about that? And if so what is it?

Secondly,

When I put the jeep into 4wd low and tried to go forward it did but was super bouncy, and just jumped and bounced around? The front two tires are extremely bald so maybe that's why? Because it seemed to be in the front end that it was doing all this stuff? Also, there was a little bit of white smoke coming out of the back of the jeep but the oil didn't have any frothy oil on the cap and the oil wasn't raised a bunch on the dipstick like water was getting in.

When I went into like 3+ RPMS on the highway revving and stuff, the engine/transmission shifted pretty smooth...

Did I maybe not use the correct method for 4wd low? Because the jeep has a "manual" option where you can select which gear you want, do I have to use that in fwd low?

When you were in 4WD low did you try to turn while driving on pavement? Chances are that range locks the center differential and you'll get binding up driving that way on dry pavement. It's meant for rough going offroad or deep snow.

I would still avoid that model.

Yeah I was on dry pavement and gravel. But dry gravel. And if I can get her to think that's a bad thing with the 4wd low I think I can get it for like 3500 bro soooo... not really a loss if I'm being real.

Even dry gravel should provide enough slip so there wouldn't be binding up in the drivetrain in 4WD low. (Dry pavement would not.) Sounds like there may well be a problem with the 4WD system.

is the 4wd system something that can ruin the car like a bad transmission?

Well everything drives through that transfer case so I'd say if that's worn it's going to be a serious problem.

Based on what you said, I would run as fast as I could away from this situation and start over.

What if I offered her 3k and just drove it till she broke?

It's your money, but those are not the most reliable vehicles to begin with and this one has problems that have surfaced just on a short test drive. I would take @Doc's advice and run away from this deal and look for something else.

Then you would be $3K in the toilet, minus the $80 per ton scrap metal value.

Would you be able to explain your answer?

Go ahead and spend $3000 for a vehicle your are going to have to have towed from your house to the scrap metal dealer for whatever they are paying, $80 per ton.
