2007 Camry 4cy oil burn 95k miles Synthetic or Conventional

Bought car new. I was using 5w-20 conventional oil for the life of the car because of oil consumption until recently. Walmart put 0w-20 full synthetic high milage oil in it behind my back! They said it was "required". So should I keep using this or switch back to the conventional? It seems to burn more oil with this.

Why are you going to Walmart for oil changes? A lot of horror stories from there as well as quick lube joints. You're fortunate if all they did was put the wrong oil in your engine. (Actually that is not really the wrong oil since 0W20 is what your owner's manual calls for and that manual does not state a preference for conventional oil.)

However if you are finding the oil consumption to be noticeably higher you could try changing back to conventional oil, though in some places that is becoming hard to find.

What really needs to be changed though is where you're getting your oil changed.

Never go to Walmart for an oil change. "Quick lube" places like Walmart, Midas, Jiffy Lube, etc are the kiss of death for cars. Your best bet is to find a good independent mechanic, we have some suggestions in the FAQ for mechanics. That same place also outlines tips and tricks to find a good mechanic if none of the mechanics in the FAQ are in your area.

Your question is answered in our FAQ ("Which oil should I put in my car"). Do not deviate.

Since yours burns oil, you'll have to top it off more frequently.

  • Thanks. This car has the defective engine. So it's a car that will always burn oil. I saw a video where Scotty's kid was putting oil into a Camry with the exact same problem and was curious if he was putting conventional or synthetic oil into it.

Also I had taken it to Walmart for 15 years and I liked I could match the oil right there at the store for top offs but I need a plan B now. I don't plan on taking it back there. They don't listen to customers and have no idea to think outside the box. Toyota does not "require" synthetic but they refused to listen or research it.
